HF welder fix

8 posts in this topic

Ok, first off, i know it's a cheap piece of crap, ans it ain't heavy enough for structural stuff, but anyhow...

I picked up their little 90amp flux welder, cuz i needed something to do some sheet metal work on our old jeep, and it was on sale for $90...

The fround clamp that comes with the thing is a cheap piece of crap.

So i swung back buy, and pucked up their 300a clamp for like $6.

Replaced the bolt that came in it with a smaller one that fit the hole in the lug already on the lead, and it made a WORLD of difference in the way the thing welds...

I wss actually gonna replace the whole lead with a piece of heavier welding cable, but i didn't get that far yet... Just figured I'd pass a little info along... B)

Yeah Tom, they just opened a new one like 10 min from me too...

Honestly, I really want a bigger, better welder, somethin along the lines of like a 170-190a brand name MIG, but this is what i could afford for now.

I've read that the HF wire is also pretty crappy, and that they work better with brand name wire, but i havn't gotten around to that yet either...

I just replaced the pos liner in my HF gas welder. I used it last night and was night and day better at a steady feed . Mine always seemed to hesitate . Now runs much more smoothly. Going to get a better ground as well for mine. There are other modifications you can do with them.

You should convert the flux to gas if you do not have one already.

i know this is an old topic but i find myself in the same boat... is there a way to convert the cheap pos (i have a hf mig 100. older model, it works fine but i want cleaner welds) to gas? can a gas inlet be added and the gun changed to a kind with a tube in it? i don't want to buy another welder because this one works. i just want it to work better.

Not sure if you can do that but there are a few simple and advance adjustments that will improve the machine. Check out this guys series on making the welder better.

It's funny, I already did all the basic upgrades without knowing that was the consensus that that's what you're supposed to do. I don't think I'm going to go to the point of the capacitor and rectifier.
