Blu's XS400

40 posts in this topic

Rescued a titled 1981 XS400 for 200 bucks the other day. PO was some young kid and judging from the rear brake lever he dropped it. Didn't come with a battery so a gel one is on order but it does crank over when I hook up a jumper box and has good compression. Pretty confident she'll fire right up. Got a plan to build it into a brat style but it will take me a couple weeks to get materials and get the garage in order. I'm chomping at the bit, hence the early-ish post lol!

Got the electrics out and settled on some bars and a tank. Need to pick up some steel for the extended backbone.

Ok, doing some frame fab and I want opinions....

What length do you guys like best and do you like the pointy end? If you do, do you like it pointed up or down?

Seat will cover the hoop but not the point probably...maybe...lol

Got those tubes around the carbs tied back to the back bone, finished the rear hoop and started mounting the tank and the seat. Gonna build up that dip in the seat with some foam so it's not so drastic. Found a stock CB750 oil bag I'm gonna cut up to make the electronics box, need to finish the new top motor mount, get the seat mounted, figure out coil placement, mount the battery... and a million other things lol.

After talking to Wino at the flatlander festivus I decided to stretch the frame five inches. Got it cut and lined up last night, need to drill some more plug weld holes for the slugs (which are about 9 inches long so I have two inches engagement into the frame tubes) and pick up a short piece of tube for the backbone. I'll have to move the rear motor mounts forward which should leave plenty of room for a battery/electrics box behind the motor. Designed up some forwards in cad and will hopefully have those cut soon as well.

Finished the stretch this weekend and moved the rear motor mounts forward, re-mounted the seat and got it covered in some snazzy purple yoga mat foam too. I have to figure out something for an electrics box and I need to mount the battery yet but getting closer. New seals and covers for the forks came in the mail, new headlight is on its way as well.

Thanks, I'm pretty happy with how its turned out so far.

Started the electrical box last night but the old man came over and side tracked me so I didn't get much done on it. Using an old license plate I had laying around to hold the battery, it'll be bolted to the top of the box so I can remove it if I need to get in there. Trying to get everything done and have it ride-able by moonshine on the 8th of August so things like the leather bag for under the seat and the jockey shift might have to wait for now. Once this stuff and the rear fender I got from Carr is mounted it's teardown for frame welding/grinding/paint, rebuild front forks, and clean wheels and engine...

Well you do have quite a bit going on, congrats on the engagement brother!

Got the motor cleaned and painted this weekend but not much else.

Gonna run over to Ace after work and get some grommets for the electrical box.

Hope to get it and both fenders done/mounted tonight.

Got the new electrical box mounted up, old one was too big to fit so I picked up a smaller one at an antique place for 6 bucks. Made a rear rack for it, got everything torn down and started the bondo on the frame. Wanna get the front end rebuilt with new seals, front and rear tire cleaned, frame and swing-arm painted by end of the weekend. New stem bearings should be here by Friday so I'd like to be working on electrical by mid next week.

Got the front end cleaned and rebuilt with new fluid and seals (man were they in need of attention), got the frame, swing-arm, fork legs and some other bits painted hammered black and got her back into almost a roller.

Nah, just gotta clean up after.

Gonna try to get the motor back in tonight, cut the chain to length and get the exhaust on it. Still waiting on forward control mounts and my boss is out sick so I can't ask him about it.... Only have a few little fab things left, headlight bracket, shorten and weld a new foot on the kickstand, and new kicker pedal needs welded on. I think the tank is gonna look like dog shit now but it is what it is. Want this done by end of month to take it down to Carr's for moonshine so a pretty tank might have to wait for now.

Thanks man. :D

Got the motor in, made the new kicker deal, welded up the headlight bracket and mounted the coils. After I got the chain on I realized my electrical box is too big, stupid mistake. My old man is on the hunt for a new box today so hopefully he finds something 1/2" narrower, I'd prefer not to have to make it at this point. Nothing real exciting but I did cross a few more things off the list I guess. Going to try to paint the headlight bucket, front fender and a few other small things tonight, possibly work on the carbs.
